Wrongful Conviction Day began as an idea of Win Wahrer, Director of Client Services at the Association in Defence of the Wrongfully Convicted (AIDWYC) http://www.aidwyc.org/
A small group of like-minded individuals – all committed to the dual cause of overturning wrongful criminal convictions and educating the broader community on this important legal and social issue – joined her and together the concept for an international day recognizing the plight of the wrongly convicted, their families and their advocates, was born. Recognizing that wrongful convictions are not limited to one jurisdiction or one nation, the group quickly sought to unite individuals and organizations world-wide in this effort to eradicate wrongful convictions.
To date, individuals, groups and organizations in seven nations have embraced this day and will mark Wrongful Conviction Day in a special way, which reflects their unique experiences and needs.
